Artist Statement

Freyja: the final product of the project, M’fhíorghrá (Irish: My True Love), is an opulent velvet wedding gown that creates a tactile narrative encapsulating the individualism of myself and my partner through devoréd imagery.

The symmetrical panels present a visual tale of our shared culture, history, stories, and love. Originating from Ireland, England, Scotland, Canada, and Denmark, each symbol fulfills a rich and complex, yet coherent sense of visual harmony. The depictions on the gown were inspired by these countries and were meticulously selected and illustrated with true intention, adding originality that is truly unique and captivating.

With a soft organic cotton sateen lining, a touch of silk organza, and finished with the luxurious feel of devoré velvet, this dress is unlike any common ready-to-order gown on the market.

Being one of the most significant objects to be handed down through a family, the wedding dress is a powerful and symbolic piece of iconography, used to express one’s love and individuality. Crafted by hand, this gown brings sentimentality and old traditions to life, forming a new heirloom for future generations.
